The Story Behind It All
Where It All Began
My beautiful little boy — Frankie ("Franks") — is the inspiration behind this story.
I’m by no means a child development specialist but I’ve always been fascinated — amazed, even — by how toddlers imagine the world. They live in a hybrid space between reality and imagination as they learn, develop and begin making sense of how things really are.
But reality can often feel heavy.
Bedtime reading became more than routine for us — it became an escape. A doorway into Frankie’s world. A place where things aren’t perfect but where challenges are met with curiosity, optimism and wonder. Through his eyes, the ordinary becomes extraordinary — and it’s a perspective many of us lose along the way.
I’ve come to treasure those quiet moments — bath time, stories before bed — because they’re where connection is built. Where imagination, confidence and feeling secure begin to form.
And over time, I began to realise he wasn’t just listening to the stories — he was stepping into them.
The Story Behind the Name
Frankie’s fascination with aeroplanes began early.
“Plane!” was one of his first words — definitely his most used. He’d call it out every time he spotted one overhead, stopping in his tracks to point to the sky and shout it with pure excitement.
It became a small ritual for our family… looking up together, wondering where the plane might be heading and what adventures lay ahead for its passengers.
There was something about flying that captured his imagination — the scale of it, the mystery of it, the idea of travelling somewhere unknown.
And it was during one flight together, high above the clouds, that his fascination became something more than just a shared ritual.
That’s where “Captain Frank” was born.
Not from a storybook, but from a real moment — shaped by the wonder children naturally find in the world around them.
Moments That Matter Most
As a co-parent to my beautiful daughter — Millie — time with her has taken on a different meaning.
You begin to approach those moments differently.
You become deeply aware that the moments you share matter — not because they’re rare, but because they matter more.
You learn to be fully present.
To put phones down.
To listen more closely.
To make ordinary routines feel meaningful.
Stories, bath time, play — they stop being small things and become the moments you carry with you.
Captain Frank was shaped in those moments — where imagination became a bridge and those shared moments became the real adventure.
The World Beneath the Adventure
But there’s something deeper within the story.
Children today are growing up in a more complex, digital world where outside influences are almost as powerful as the influence of parents. Positive role models — especially emotionally present parents — have never been more important.
And that influence doesn’t begin in teenage years… It begins early.
In play.
In questions.
In shared stories.
In feeling safe enough to express big feelings.
Captain Frank celebrates that space — where imagination and guidance meet, and where children begin forming a sense of courage, kindness and who they are.
What Being a Dad Has Taught Me
Fatherhood changes you in ways you can’t even begin to comprehend. You go into it thinking about the role you’ll play — the guidance you’ll give, the lessons you want to pass on. But what I’ve come to realise is that it doesn’t only flow one way.
Through my children, I’ve been reminded how to see the world with imagination and a sense of wonder we often leave behind as adults.
They’ve taught me patience in moments that test it and that presence matters especially during difficult times... Not just to listen to words but to feelings, questions and the thoughts still finding their way into language.
Being a dad isn’t just about leading the way. It’s about being led by your children too.
And in many ways, the lessons woven into the world of Captain Frank are the very same ones they've been quietly teaching me all along.
For Every Parent
Every parent’s experience is different.
Different routines, different challenges, different moments that shape the memories we carry forward.
But at the heart of it, so much of the experience is shared.
The bedtime stories… the questions that come out of nowhere… the laughter in the smallest, most unexpected moments.
The quiet realisations that time moves faster than we’re ever ready for.
Captain Frank was born from my own experiences of fatherhood — from imagination, connection and the lessons learned along the way.
But what it represents belongs to so much more than just one story.
It belongs to every parent who’s watched their child step into a story… every parent who’s seen confidence grow through play… every parent who’s found themselves learning just as much as they’re teaching.
Because beyond the adventures, beyond the characters and beyond the stories themselves…
